Introduction

  1. Participants are split into two groups, group A and B.

  2. Each group works together to create a still scene based on a theme provided by the facilitator.

  3. One group presents their scene first, allowing the other group to observe and explore what is presented.

  4. There is a short discussion, then the second group shows their scene and has a discussion.

Instructions

  • All participants who wish to participate get to be in the scene- this may be part of the challenge for some groups!

  • Once the scene is set up, the participants remain silent.

  • No one is here to judge, just observe and learn.

  • Discussion ideas:

    • What did you see?

    • What do you have questions about?

    • Was there a specific thing that made you feel something?

  • Ideas for themes: Love, connection, hate, hope, family, home, belonging, outcast, freedom, oppression.

Wrap-up

  • How did it feel to be a statue? How did it feel to observe?

  • Many times this activity brings up ideas related to cultural context. Is there a symbol that means something significant to you culturally? Are there poses that always convey the same meaning?
