“Hunting” for things
A warm-up exercise that fosters creativity, collaboration, and communication by creating spontaneous stories through pairing items.
Duration: 50 minutes. Introduction: 10 minutes. Finding pairs: 20 minutes. Spontaneous storytelling: 20 minutes. Summary: 10 minutes.
Difficulty level: 4/5
Number of participants: Even number
Source: Superbelfrzy
Preparation
A set of small objects, twice the number of participants, hidden in a box or bag.
Introduction
Each participant randomly selects 2 items from the box/bag (example items for inspiration).
Make sure the selection is spontaneous and that the drawing process is quick and efficient.
Inform the participants that upon hearing the signal "START," they should find a person/pair who has items that somehow match their own. Further instructions will be given once they have found their pair.
Instructions
Upon hearing the signal "START," each person searches for their pair whose items match theirs.
Once the pairs have found each other, they present the rationale for their choice and create a spontaneous story based on the selected items. The story should be made up "on the spot," but it needs to make sense.
Ensure that while one pair is telling their story, the other participants listen attentively and do not focus on preparing their own responses, as the goal of the exercise is to improve the ability to tell spontaneous stories.
Helpful tips
In case of an odd number of participants, assign the person without a pair an additional role, such as Observer, Timer, or Inspirer. You can also ask them which role they would like to take on during this exercise.
Wrap-up (10 minutes)
After listening to all the stories, encourage participants to discuss:
What are your impressions of this exercise?
How do you feel about creating a story "on the spot"?
What aspects of the exercise were easy for you, and what posed a challenge?
